Welcome to SSoCIA! Ours is a new organization (established in 2016) dedicated to scholarly exploration of the many “broader questions” raised by astrobiology (and space exploration more generally). Our goal is to create a permanent community to foster research on these issues, broadening the discourse and enhancing the perspective of more empirically-focused organizations like NASA, ESA, AbSciCon, and SpaceX. We thus welcome experts from all disciplines and backgrounds, asking only that they be committed to serious exploration of the many social and conceptual issues in the field. Our ranks are growing, but currently include over 300 people from a broad array of backgrounds including biologists, chemists, historians, philosophers, engineers, anthropologists, educators, policy experts, and science fiction writers, to name a few. We hope you will consider attending one of our semi-annual conferences, where we strive to create a welcoming and informal atmosphere to encourage the free exchange of ideas. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the other officers.
